Immich Desktop
I just learned about Immich the other day. I wanted to share my excitement about Immich with a non-tech relative and noticed that there seems not to be a simple way to just run an installer and use it as a standalone app on you laptop. And I think Immich has enough valuable features to justify a slightly limited usecase, for me personally
- we can share our photos as a family
- the family can backup their photos to the family MacBook
- browsing through the images is really beautiful
- everything is running local and outside any (e.g. Apple’s) cloud.
So here is Immich Desktop for Mac. It
- runs a complete Immich stack (server, background workers, AI, database, cache) on your Mac using Apple’s native container runtime
- opens Immich in a browser window
- exposes Immich on the local network so phones, tablets, and other computers can connect using the Immich mobile or web app
- manages Immich configuration through a native settings UI — no config files to edit by hand
- handles Immich updates in-app
- supports data to reside on an external drive (which may not always be plugged in)
